Today, July 20th, is the anniversary of the first lunar landing. 40 years ago, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed at the Sea of Tranquility and secured their place in history.
I must say, as a long-term Apollo geek, how fantastic it is to see the amount of coverage the anniversary is getting both in the media and within people’s minds. I’m listening to my usual morning radio station and they’re mentioning the anniversary every few minutes – it’s wonderful, I only wish it was the anniversary every day…!
As one would expect, microblogging site Twitter has contributed to the anniversary in its own way. Below is a quick summation of all the users to follow if you’re both an Apollo fan and a Twitter user:
@therealBuzz – This is why I love technology. As the name would suggest, this is the Twitter account of Apollo 11 lunar module pilot, Buzz Aldrin. Particularly useful if you live in the USA, as Aldrin mentions where and when he’ll be signing copies of his new book, Magnificent Desolation. (Review coming here soon!)
@NASAWatch – Regular updates of all the media coverage of the anniversary.
@BarackObama – The crew of Apollo 11 will be meeting with the US president today, so watch here for any information about their visit.
@NASA – Exactly what it says on the tin: the official Twitter for NASA.
@AP11_CAPCOM – An interesting concept. Since the anniversary of the Apollo 11 launch, both this Twitter and its sister updates (see below) have been Tweeting the mission in “real time”. This is the CAPCOM feed. Produced by WeChooseTheMoon.org, which is another fascinating way to look at the mission.
@APP11_SPACECRAFT – See above for details. This is the “transmissions” from the actual space craft.
And finally… @LLHdotCOM – our Twitter. < / plug >
