• Although portrayed by Tom Hanks in the movie Apollo 13, Jim Lovell himself appeared in the film as the captain of the USS Iwo Jima. He's not on the screen for long, and it's right at the end, but Captain Lovell actually gets to shake his "own" hand. #
• TRIVIA >> We have Apollo to thank for a lot of innovations outside of astronomy. Freeze-dried food, running shoes and water purification systems are just a few things that use technology discovered during the campaign. #
• TRIVIA >> The astronauts and NASA were involved in a igood-natured battle over acceptable call signs for their craft. After allowing Apollo 10 to fly with craft named Charlie Brown and Snoopy, NASA clearly felt that Haystack and Snowcone were a step too far on Apollo 11. Thus we were spared "The Snowcone  has landed!". #
• TRIVIA >> The Mercury spacecrafts all feature the number "7" in their name. All of the missions were flown by Original 7 astronauts, who each named their capsules and added the "7" to symbolise the teamwork of the seven astronauts. #
• TRIVIA >> Wally Schirra was the only astronaut to fly all three programs, on Mercury 8, Gemini 6A and Apollo 7. Gus Grissom was due to match this before he was killed in training for Apollo 1. #
